feature request - debug variables

I seem to be among many who find the install under Linux difficult to get working. Would it be possible to include a script with the install that would gather all relevant variables for the local system, either a shell script or via php through the gui. This way, anyone posting or requesting help would have a standard format debug info to work from. Those of us struggling could also look at the working config from another system...
If this is asking too much, I would love to see a sticky post in the install forum listing all relevant variables for a working config...

dns entries
bav files
sendmail files, etc...
