Authentication Token Manipulation Error

When I tried to change my password after entering the root username & password, I got this error:

"Authentication Token Manipulation Error"

I tried using different passwords and even switched from Virtualbox to VMware but I still get the same error.

How do I resolve this problem?

Edit: I tried loading another OVA virtual machine and the password change is working. So, I don't think it's my system's problem.
