Adding an X-Header

Hi
I have a requirement to be able to add an X-Header to mails. Initially I need to just add a hard-coded Xheader to all mails but long term I need to have a tickbox option in the GUI to be able to control if the Xheader is set or not.
Has anyone done this or something similar, if so I'd really appreciate any guidance you can give on this .
